This is a 3-day CPD. Working with couples requires a distinct skillset, one that goes beyond individual therapy. This training is designed specifically for psychotherapists and counsellors who want to expand their practice and feel fully equipped to take on couple work.

 

By the end of this CPD, you won’t just understand the theory, you’ll be ready to see couples in practice with clarity, structure, and confidence.

Course Content

You will leave with:

  • The ability to understand and navigate complex relational dynamics

This training draws on established and respected models, including:

  • Attachment theory (John Bowlby)

  • Transactional Analysis frameworks developed by Eric Berne

  • The Drama Triangle by Stephen Karpman

  • Developmental and relational perspectives from Ellyn Bader and Peter Pearson

Alongside integrative modalities such as CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Psychodynamic approaches.

Foundations of Couples Work

  • Contracting, ethics, and assessment

  • Understanding couple dynamics and relational patterns

  • Working with love languages and communication styles

Relational Depth & Development

  • Attachment styles and their impact on adult relationships

  • Early developmental influences and relational trauma

  • Cultural, ethical, and identity-based considerations

  • Neurodiversity and neuro-affirmative practice in relationships

Working with Complexity

  • Conflict patterns, including gaslighting and stonewalling

  • Trust, betrayal, and repair

  • Anger, rage, and stress responses within the couple system

  • Sex, intimacy, and relationship structures

  • Awareness and response to domestic violence and abuse

Models & Interventions in Practice

  • Transactional Analysis: PAC model, Script Theory, Games Theory, and Racket System

  • Transference and countertransference in couple work

  • Integrative interventions (SFT, CBT, Psychodynamic)

  • Structuring sessions and ending couple work effectively

  • The Gottman Method
